Gain insight into the leading Danish sports sector at the hand of top speakers

Be inspired by the Danish sports world!

On 13 and 14th of april 2023, PR-Education is hosting a two days congres in  Copenhagen, Denmark, in collaboration with many players in the Danish and European sports market.
Denmark is a guide country in the field of sports. In this study and network trip we will explore why. With a line-up of top speakers from the Danish and Dutch sports world and a visit to a leading sports venue, you will gain valuable insights into the both sports model.

Why this congress?

From 2004 on our professional careers have been in the world of sports, mostly the Danish and Dutch world of sports. Two very different worlds.
Recently, we featured in articles in which we are calling towards a paradigm shift in the way the Dutch view sports. A shift towards the Danish attitude: regarding sport as a vital part of society.

In Denmark, we need to reinforce the way we have viewed sports in the past en learn from our best practices. Also, though we call for a paradigm shift in the Dutch world of sports, there are plenty valuable lessons the Dutch can teach us. This trip combines both.

In our initiative, one of the stepping stones is a study and network trip to Denmark. But what exactly is our initiative?

The Danish world of sport: a durable blueprint for sports vital role in society

In Denmark, sports are viewed as a vital part of our live. The following four pillars are essential for sports to be able to fulfill this role:

  1. Investing in our professionals: a salary fitting the responsibilities, good job prospects and constantly investing into education is what enables our professionals to perform on the highest level.
  2. Facilities: our facilities should match the demand of our local municipalities (and in some cases regions). The municipality should predominantly fund and the facilities focus on facilitating as to maximize the social return of investment.
  3. Strong associations and clubs: sport benefits most from strong associations and clubs, where a good mix of professionals and volunteers maximize the results, both in top sports as grassroot sports.
  4. Cooperation within sports, sports and politics: this cooperation is streamlined with the goal to achieve the effect sport has on society. This requires an integral view on sports, which runs from parliament to the volunteers and everybody in between.

This is what your investment will bring

This trip is benificial for people in the world of sports, especially for:

  • (future) leaders and professionals in sports: we will give insight in how the organizational and financial model works in organizations in which all sports are incorporated (in conjunction with associations and clubs).
We will also discuss the working conditions, the role of career opportunities, education, (local) governments, associations and the organizations which operate the facilities.
  • associations and clubs: we will explore how they are strengthened (in both organization as financially) so they can play a vital role in their communities and top sports.

Contents of this congress

At the hand of top speakers of the Danish world of sports plus a visit to an exemplary complex, we will give insight into all beforementioned topics. Michael Andersen and Joop Alberda, will guide us through the various subjects.

Additionally, we will focus on the development of four areas of sports in which Denmark achieve world leading results:

  • Swimming has always been a popular sport in Denmark and the number of swimming pools per inhabitants is among the largest in Europe. In recent decades, Danish swimming has achieved many excellent results at international championships such as the Olympics, World Championships and European Championships – especially for girls and women. Sigma is among Denmark’s best swimming clubs.
  • Denmark is among the world’s best handball nations – i.e. men’s World champion at the last three Championships. Handball is particularly popular in smaller towns and well-educated child and youth coaches are an important explanation for strong talent development, both for girls and boys.
  • Football: is the most popular sport for Danish children and youth. In recent years, girls’ football in particular has experienced great progress, both in terms of players and quality. Both the Danish Football Association (DBU) and the clubs have a strong focus on talent development and good training facilities.
  • Cycling – both on road, track and BMX – is probably the sport in Denmark which currently achieves the best international results, i.a. victory for Jonas Vingegaard in the Tour de France. The number of child and youth riders is extremely modest, but the quality of talent recruitment and development is among the best in the world.
Beforehand we will conduct an interview with all the participants so that we can focus on the many points of interest and learning goals and help you translate the contents of the program to your own working field.

Besides our stay in Copenhagen, the trip includes visit a to a leading sport complex: the Rudersdal sportscomplex

The Rudersdal sportscomplex  is a stellar example of a complex which incorporates all types of sports and works alongside over 35 sport clubs. One of those clubs, Sigma Swim, will give you insights into their organization, their booming activities and how they managed to partake in every Olympics since 2000.
